Your question Our answer.

  1. Which type of roof box should I choose?

Which roof box is best for you depends on how you will use it. Here are some important points to keep in mind: - What are the dimensions of the baggage you plan to transport with the roof box? - What is the weight of the baggage you want to transport? - How much baggage fits in a roof box? - Which type of car do you own? Below you can find the answers to these questions.
  2. What are the dimensions of the baggage you plan to transport with the roof box?

If you take regular ski holidays or plan to do so in the future you would be wise to choose a longer box. For suitcases, camping gear and the like a shorter roof box is sufficient.
  3. What is the weight of the baggage you want to transport?

The maximum load a roof box can carry is 50-75 kg (depending on the roof box model). Never exceed the maximum roof load specified by your car’s manufacturer (refer to the owner’s manual for your car to find the exact weight). Keep in mind that you must add up the weight of your roof bars, roof box and contents of the roof box; this total must not exceed the maximum permitted load.
  4. How much baggage fits in a roof box?

Car roof boxes are available in all shapes and sizes. So before you buy one, make a list of all the things you know you will want to carry inside it. You will find roof boxes that provide from 300 to 530 litres of extra baggage space.
  5. Which roof box fits my type of car?

The choice of roof box also depends on the type of car you own. One consideration, for example, is which box best matches the design of your car. There are also differences in the way a roof box opens: some open at the rear, others open on the right side and yet others can be opened on both sides. This, in combination with the type of car, can make a big difference when it comes to attaching and loading the roof box. A roof box that can be opened at the rear can be loaded while standing on either side of or behind the car. A roof box that is designed to be opened and loaded on one or both sides has the advantage of having larger loading openings.
  6. What is the best way to load my roof box?

The manner in which you load your roof box is of great importance, not only to utilise the space as efficiently as possible, but also for your own safety and that of others. *Check the maximum roof load of your car before loading a roof box (follow the car manufacturer’s instructions). *The baggage must be distributed as evenly as possible in the roof box. *Make sure the load cannot shift while driving. Luggage straps are provided for this purpose (not included with Hapro Roady). *Do not fill the roof box too high; the cover must close easily. *Try to place mostly lighter items in the roof box. The best place for any heavier items is above the bars, in the middle of the box. The very heaviest items belong in the boot of your car. This approach will keep your car’s centre of gravity as low as possible, which is beneficial to your car’s driving behaviour. *When you transport items with sharp, protruding edges, cover them carefully to prevent damage to the roof box and other contents.
  7. Can a car roof box affect the car’s driving behaviour?

Yes, a roof box certainly can have an impact on your car’s driving behaviour. When driving, pay particular attention to the following points: *Susceptibility to side winds *Curves *Braking *Increased height of your car – approx. 60 centimetres (roof bars and roof box). Before you drive off, check whether everything is secured and closed properly. We recommend that you adjust your driving style and speed accordingly. Tip: Remove the roof box from your roof if you don’t plan to use it again for some time; this will improve your fuel economy.
  8. What is the best way to store my roof box?

You can store your roof box in a number of different ways. You can keep it in your attic or garage, and a space-saving hanging system is available that allows you to hang the roof box from the ceiling. We recommend that you always clean the roof box before storage. Avoid exposing the box to direct sunlight for long periods of time, as this may cause discolouration of material (see manual).
  9. What is the best way to maintain my roof box?

Wash your roof box with clean water, and add a bit of car shampoo if needed. Never use an abrasive cleanser, oil or solvent. Also never use any cleaning product that contains alcohol, bleach or ammonia. These affect the composition of the plastic and may cause irreparable damage and/or discolouration.
  10. What can I do to receive a replacement for a lost key as quickly as possible?

We will be able to process your order more quickly if you are able to provide your key number. Tip: Note the number of your key on your manual and/or keep a note of it with your car papers.
  11. What factors are responsible for the price differences among the various Hapro roof boxes?

Some of the factors that lead to the price differences among the various Hapro roof boxes are: *Material (ABS/ASA is more impact-resistant than polystyrene. The ASA surface layer makes the roof box very weather- and UV-resistant. ABS-PMMA high gloss: Very high quality material equivalent to ABS/ASA, yet with a (metallic or non-metallic) high gloss as a finishing touch.) *Size *Attachment system (various attachment systems are available: Premium-Fit (Traxer/Zenith), Easy-Fit (Probox), Standard-Fit (Roady). *Design (While designing roof boxes great care is put into aerodynamics and styling) *Double-sided opening (Some models feature openings on both sides. The main benefits are easier attachment and a larger loading opening.) *Central locking (Almost all Hapro roof boxes feature central locking, for a super-secure closure and optimum ease-of-use.) *Dynamic buckling springs (These ensure that the roof box opens easily yet also stays closed securely). *Steel profiles *Quality of the roof box.
  12. Are Hapro roof boxes of good quality?

Hapro maintains rigorous requirements for the materials and production processes. Everything is checked thoroughly to ensure the strict production standards are met. This is why Hapro is able to guarantee the outstanding quality of its products. All Hapro roof boxes bear the TÜV quality mark and have passed the City Crash Test.
  13. Is the roof box well protected against theft?

All Hapro roof boxes are fitted with a good lock: a simple click lock and central locking give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing ‘lid closed is locked box’. Because the attachment to the roof bars is locked inside the roof box, it is impossible to remove the properly closed roof box from the car. The roof boxes are, of course, made of plastic, so a determined thief with tools can break one open.
  14. Are there any special requirements for the roof bars I will use?

Only use the roof box in combination with internationally certified roof bars. The roof box may not be mounted diagonally or backwards on the roof bars. T-slot profile: are your roof bars too wide for the attachment system? An adapter kit for attachment to aluminium roof bars with a T-slot profile is also available. Ask your dealer about this special attachment system.
  15. What is the warranty on a Hapro roof box?

Hapro Roady roof boxes are covered by a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. All other Hapro roof box models have a 5-year warranty.
  16. What do I need to keep in mind to transport goods in a roof box safely?

Follow the instructions carefully when attaching your roof box. If you find that one or more parts are missing, contact your dealer. Do not use your roof box before all the parts have been mounted in accordance with the instructions. Ensure the lid is properly secured before driving off. Ensure your roof box is always attached as explained in the installation instructions.
  17. How easy is it to place my roof box on the roof of the car?

In general, it only takes one person to attach the roof box to the roof bars. Our dealers will demonstrate this for you.
  18. What is the difference between Hapro and other manufacturers?

Hapro is an international company that sells its products around the world. This puts us in a position to stay on top of the latest developments in the areas of trends and technical advances. Accordingly, we are able to design and develop a broad range of products attuned to the needs of the consumer.
  19. How can I obtain spare parts?

Contact your local Hapro roof box dealer for more information.
  20. How fast can I drive with a roof box on my roof?

There is no simple answer to this question. It goes without saying, of course, that you must obey the applicable traffic laws. Depending on the shape, size and weight of the cargo you are carrying, your car will respond differently while driving. Adjust your speed to match the load in the car, the road and weather conditions, etc. A load on the roof affects the car’s driving behavior, braking distances and susceptibility to side winds.
  21. How should I mount my roof box?

Naturally every Hapro roof box is accompanied by a manual in which you can see exactly how the roof box is intended to be attached to the roof bars. Here are a number of tips to help you get started: *Make sure the roof box is centred on the roof bars. This ensures that the weight of the box is distributed evenly. *Make sure the roof box is positioned in line with the car so as to minimise its influence on the driving behaviour. *Depending on the type of box, the minimum distance between the roof bars is between 62.7 cm and 93 cm. The Premium-Fit system can be mounted on roof bars with a maximum width of 95 mm; the Easy-Fit system is suitable for a maximum width of 75 mm. The Standard-Fit system works on roof bars with a width of up to 56 mm.
  22. How does the Premium-Fit mounting system work?

Hapro Zenith and Hapro Traxer roof boxes are equipped with the latest quick attachment system: Premium-Fit. This is Hapro’s own design: conceived, patented and manufactured in-house. Premium-Fit provides a quick, simple and – above all – safe means of attaching the roof box. With a simple twist of the knob you engage the clamps that firmly grip the roof bars. A ratcheting torque indicator tells you exactly when the clamps have been tightened far enough. These roof boxes are suitable for all roof bars with a width of up to 95 mm and a maximum height of 38 mm. The Premium-Fit elements can be slid independently to perfectly match the distance between the bars. The Zenith and Traxer models are suitable for all common roof bars.
  23. How does the Easy-Fit mounting system work?

Establishing a rock-solid connection between the Hapro Probox, equipped with the patented Easy-Fit system, and the roof bars is a matter of a few simple steps: insert, twist, lock and cover. That’s all that’s required for a safe trip. The profile of the roof bars can be up to 75 mm wide and 40 mm high. Special elongated clamps are available for roof bars with a height greater than 40 mm. The distance between the roof bars should preferably be at least 70 cm.
  24. How does the Standard-Fit mounting system work?

The Hapro Roady is equipped with the Standard-Fit system. You can safely fasten your extra luggage space to the roof bars using the handy U-bracket and two safety nuts, which are attached from the inside. The profile of the roof bars can be up to 56 mm wide and 35 mm high. The minimum distance between the bars is 62.7 cm (Roady 350) or 52.8 cm (Roady 450).
